Description

Ys Chronicles II is a port of a classic 1988 PC RPG for modern phones. With around 10 hours of gameplay, a wonderful story, and unique gameplay mechanics, this is a game that’s very much worth revisiting.

Ys Chronicles II is a classic RPG that has helped to inspire many of the games that we play today. Ys Chronicles II was first released in 1988, meaning that it predates just about every other game in the app store. Despite its age, Ys Chronicles II has great gameplay, a gripping story, and even some innovative mechanics that help it hold its own against the best modern role-playing games.

In Ys II, you control Adol Christin. He’s a hero who’s been stranded far away from home on a great journey to defeat all of the evil that plagues Esteria. Just like in more modern RPGs, you can level Adol up and increase his stats, enabling you to progress through the game and slay powerful monsters and bosses.

Adol’s journey through Esteria involves fighting enemies, completing quests, solving puzzles, and defeating bosses. Unlike some other classic RPGs, Ys Chronicles II uses a real-time combat system. Adol is also very mobile. This lets you dart around and move out of the way of enemy attacks. To make this easier, most enemies flash before they swing at you, giving you time to move out of the way.

Ys II doesn’t make you press any buttons to perform normal attacks. Instead, you simply steer Adol into your foe of choice and he’ll swing away with his equipped weapon, dealing lots of damage. This is perfect for mobile players, but it’s not a new feature. Instead, this is how the game has always worked. It’s a perfect compliment to Ys’ high-movement, fast-paced combat.

In addition to just plowing into your foes, you can direct Adol to cast a number of powerful spells to shift the tides of battle. Magic is limited but powerful, with some bosses requiring you to use only magic – or none at all. If you’re not interested in managing your resources and using extra buttons, you’ll be able to get through most of the game with normal attacks, but the magic system helps to add a bit of extra depth to the game.

Ys II was a big deal in the late 80’s and early 90’s. It’s been re-released numerous times for just about every console or computer system since then. The current phone release takes advantage of all of the improvements made over the years, giving you tight controls, updated graphics, and a responsive game that can run on older hardware. You also get the full Ys package, including lots of story content, cutting-edge (for 1988) visuals, and a suite of excellent music to adventure to.

Overall, Ys II is a cheap game that’ll give you about 10 hours of content. While you’ll probably want to use a walkthrough to get yourself past some of the game’s more obtuse puzzles, you’ll still have lots of fun mastering the combat system, leveling Adol up, and experiencing the story. It’s a relic of the past that’s aged very well, giving old and new fans alike a chance to experience what gaming was like in the early ‘90s.

How to play

In order to attack, Adol has to run into enemies. This means that it can be tricky to dodge their attacks while you’re swinging away like crazy. In some cases, you’ll even have trouble seeing the flash due to your barrage of attacks. To combat this, you’ll want to master the art of attacking at a slight angle. Not only will enemies have trouble hitting you if you’re not tunneling into them straight on, but you’ll also have an easier time spotting the warning flash before they unleash an attack.

Additionally, you do more damage if you can push an enemy into a wall. The faster you can shove your foes into an obstacle, the faster you can get your sword to swing. By mastering this technique and the art of attacking at a slight angle, you’ll be able to cut down basic monsters with ease.

Ys II is very much a relic of its time. Unlike modern games, which force you to grind to keep up with your friends in multiplayer, Ys forces you to grind to beat tough enemies. You’ll find yourself doing a bit of pointless combat to keep Adol’s stats high enough to crush your foes. There aren’t any energy systems or daily timers here, just good old-fashioned sword swings at weak enemies to gain experience. You will be encouraged to grind, though, so be prepared to backtrack a bit.

More importantly, however, Ys II is obtuse. The game developers assumed that you would take very good notes when NPCs talk and write down clues hidden throughout the world. Even if you do that, however, lots of very experienced gamers get stuck in old-school RPGs like this one. That’s totally fine, but be aware that there were telephone hint lines in the early ’90s for this sort of thing. In the modern era, you’re going to wind up Googling a walkthrough and using it to solve many of the game’s difficult puzzles. Don’t feel bad about doing this. Even the most hardcore Ys fans forget secrets every once in a while, and when they do, they’ll use the same walkthroughs as you.

As far as difficulty goes, Ys II is more forgiving than you might think. Picking Nightmare doesn’t make the game harder as much as it makes the game grinder. The level cap in Ys II is high enough that you can easily out-level any challenge posed by the higher difficulty mode. The only problem you’ll have is dodging (due to the extra projectiles fired), but the extra health and damage you’ll get from leveling will help offset this. That said, there’s no real reason to play on the higher difficulties except for bragging rights, so don’t feel like it’s something you need to do.

Finally, don’t forget about magic. While the magic system is technically optional, some of the game’s more powerful spells can trivialize combat. This is especially apparent in the later sections of the game. If you’re playing on Nightmare, magic will dramatically reduce the amount of grinding you need to do and let you finish the game in a reasonable amount of time.
