Crossy Road is a smooth combination of classic Frogger-style road-crossing gameplay and a modern endless runner. Try to get as far as you can across roads, rivers, and railroad tracks while collecting coins that you can use to unlock new characters that totally change how the game looks and plays.
If you've played Frogger (or even just heard of it), Crossy Road needs very little introduction. This simple mobile game allows you to control a character - a chicken at first - who stands at the side of a busy roadway. Swipe forward, back, left, and right to make small hops in your direction of choice, but beware of hazards like cars, buses, trains, rivers, and more. By timing your swipes carefully, you'll be able to navigate past these hazards and cross various roads in your infinite quest for progress.
Crossy Road utilizes a blocky, pixellated art style that's very Minecraft-esque. The color selection and textures are very much on point, while the game's simple graphics help ensure that it gets great framerates on most mobile devices. Importantly, the overall theme of the game is tight and evocative, portraying an idyllic, simple world that's fun to hang out in. Importantly, various unlockable characters completely change the look and feel of the game. Picking the kangaroo, for example, changes the game's green, forested city into a brown desert. It still looks great, but it's very different. Alternately, picking Pac-Man changes the game's graphics to resemble a 3d-version of the classic arcade hit, complete with black backgrounds, white boundaries, and ghosts instead of cars.
Crossy Road has also borrowed from modern endless runner tropes. Unlike many classic arcade games, Crossy Road enables you to advance forever. You're only stopped by your inevitable demise, whether that's by car, train, water, or something else. This means that you can play the game for exactly as long as you want, but it also means that you don't get the same emotional peaks and valleys that you do when you're struggling to beat a difficult level. There's still a sense of ease at the start, of course, since you don't have anything on the line, but there's no tension near the end of a stage as you struggle to get past the last few lanes of traffic. Instead, there's an ever-increasing feeling that you'll mess up your high score. This smooth gradient certainly has some appeal, but once you've set a massive high score it'll be hard to get your points that high again, meaning that the game might feel dull and empty.
In total, Crossy Road is a unique, fun game that's totally worth the download. It looks great, it's got lots of gameplay variety through the changes added by different characters, and it's very fair in its monetization. Be sure to check it out!
Crossy Road's basic tap-to-move controls keep gameplay basic. Simply nudge the screen in your direction of choice to make a sizeable hop towards your objective. The real trick is keeping your focus, staying sharp, and using your reactions to navigate the game's ever-changing obstacle course.
First, be aware that you can't sit forever. If Crossy Road ever thinks you're idle for too long, an eagle will swoop down and eat you. This hidden timer can be frustrating at first, but it helps to reinforce the theme of the game. It's called Crossy Road and not Waity Road for a reason.
Second, try to think holistically. Skilled Crossy Road players don't cross one lane of traffic at a time. Instead, they try to move forward as far as they can on each interaction. This often involves finding a gap in traffic and zooming two, three, or four lanes ahead with very quick taps. This strategy will help you get farther in levels faster while also diminishing your risk of getting hit by a car. The less time you spend on the road, the safer you are. In other words, don't be afraid to go fast.
Third, make sure that your hands are out of the way of the screen. This tip might sound basic, but it's vital that you can spot incoming cars from as far away as possible. If your hands are covering a few centimeters of the screen you'll lose valuable reaction time and you won't be able to plan as far ahead.
Fourth, don't be afraid to pause the game occasionally. While sitting at the side of the road and waiting for a break in traffic will get you eaten, pausing the game won't. Crossy Road can get quite hectic and challenging as you get farther into the game, so don't feel bad if you need a quick break to reset your mental state. The game is about focus and concentration as much as it is anything else, so anything you can do to stay alert and engaged will help increase your high score.
Finally, remember that lots of characters in Crossy Road mix up the basic gameplay with unique twists. If you've hit a roadblock in terms of your normal progression, consider spending your coins to unlock a new random character or shell out a couple of dollars for a character you find interesting. Pac-Man can eat ghost "cars" after picking up big blocks, for example, which means that you get to approach "roads" differently than other characters. This gameplay shakeup can help you overcome your plateaus and smash your high scores with ease!
Crossy Road has a very reasonable monetization model. Characters can be purchased directly for real-life money in a refreshingly transparent scheme, with each character costing a couple of bucks at most. Additionally, while you play the game, you'll be able to pick up coins that you can use in an in-game shop. These coins can be used to purchase a random character. This means that if you play the game a lot, you'll slowly build up a stable of unique road-crossers that you can use to spice up your experience. Alternately, if you're really hankering for a specific character, it's cheap, fair, and direct to add them to your roster.
